Rumex longifolius - plant dye no. 2.

On my walks I have noticed that a lot of rumex longifolius, or northern dock, grow along the roads around here.
There are so many wonderful and inspirational blogs out there to learn from, and that rumex longifolius is a dye plant I have learned from Kristin in Iceland's blog. She too dyes yarn with plant materials.
As there is so much rumex longifolius around here, I thought I would harvest some for a plant dye, and yesterday I brought a basket and scissors and harvested a good pile of plants, both flowers, leaves and stems.

The finished dyeing pot looked to give an olive green dye, but when adding alum and the wool yarn, the dye turned to a bright yellow colour...

Og det ble garnet også.

And that was also how the dyed yarn turned out.

A nice bright yellow colour, rather similar to the colour you get from dyeing with birch leaves.
The result was 150 grams of yarn dyed from rumex longifolius .
I have not yet decided what to make from the yarn, but I will find good use of it eventually :)

From the yarn dyed with lichen a little while ago I have made some crochet patches (and the green patched are from some left over yarn dyed with st. john's wort).
I need more yarn to finish this project. The yarn dyed with rumex longifolius is a little too bright to combine here I think, but I will plant dye more in summer and maybe a later result will go with these colours :)

Det var artig! Naturfarga garn gir utrolig flotte farger.

Gorgeous colour and who would have thought you could achieve it from the common dock plant? I once grew an ornamental dock plant it was called (I think) rumex sanguineous or bloody dock.It was quite pretty and not too invasive.

I´m so glad that I inspired you to try this out... and what a wonderful colour you got! If you wash it with water mixed up with a little bit of salmiak spiritus the colour turnes into an extreamly yellow colour! :-)

I love the green colour of your John Wort´s-yarn. We don´t have that in Iceland :-)

So lovely! I get this very happy feeling seeing the freshly picked plants and then seeing the beautiful dyed yarn at the end. One day I would love to try this. I have never tried dying and last year I had so much Tansy it would have been perfect. Oh well, maybe one day. Can't wait to see what you create with your gorgeous new yarn. Hugs xoxox
